Post-Dam Forest • 2022-

When we hear the words “city” and “water” together, most of us conjure up images of harbors, dams or floating structures. We grew up in places where people exercised their control over nature. It is a phenomenon that has brought us this far. Yet we are now beginning to realize that our way of life is not sustainable. But is there no alternative to this? Can’t we build cities that help us regain intimacy with nature?

Post-Dam Forest is a speculative design project that revolves around a utopian vision for a future Rotterdam in the face of a climate catastrophe. Inspired by works by Constant Nieuwenhuys, Metabolic architecture movement, a childhood spent in communist flats, and life among the mise-en-scene of the port of Rotterdam, the design acts as a commentary on current issues such as the housing crisis, immigration, and the climate catastrophe.

In the digital age of now, humans are neither represented by brushstrokes, ink nor figures on a light-sensitive emulsion, but by a collection of square pixels. Tiles of data that can be viewed on backlit screens

In this ongoing series of portraits, I explore themes of immortality, digitalism, collectivism, and mass surveillance.

Heart Work Heroes • 2022

Heart Work Heroes is the biggest open-air exhibition for healthcare in the Netherlands. Over 41 statues had been embellished by local artists and spread out all over Rotterdam.

Our aim is to show our appreciation for healthcare workers in a positive and colorful way.

As a winner of an art competition, my design ‘Ovation’ has been chosen to fill a guest spot of an emerging artist.

The work can be seen from 18th of May until 27th of June on Schouwburgplein in Rotterdam.

Poetry International • 2022

in mij sleept een slak zich prehistorisch kalm
terug naar het begin en een mens zich naar het einde; geen van beide
is in zicht, alleen dit tijdelijke midden.

Excerpt from “Midden” by Marjolein van Heemstra

From Friday 10 to Sunday 12 June the 52nd Poetry International was throwing its festival’s doors wide open to celebrate poetry, with eye-catching poets from all over the world and accessible events bursting with linguistic delights. Poetry everywhere, live from the hearts of the festival at LantarenVenster and Verhalenhuis Belvédère in Rotterdam.

To celebrate the wide range of diverse poets this year, Poetry International commissioned a selection of Rotterdam artists to illustrate poems in posters and animations.

Blok • 2021 –

acrylic on canvas • 60x60cm

“Blok” is a grey, concrete, low-cost apartment building.
It’s a place people live in, but it also lives in people.

Inspired by a year in isolation, Blok is an ongoing painting series exploring themes of liminal spaces and the unconscious.

Mark It Down • 2021

Art should be accessible to everyone, and this is achieved by bringing creators and spectators together in a visual-spatial interplay.

Mark It Down is a collaborative mural initiative realized on a 1200m2 surface at the Rhôneweg in Amsterdam.

It was made possible through a collaboration with Sikkens, the MAKERSTOREN, and a group of international artists…
